What's happening at BISC ?
To the BISC membership,
The Scholarship Committee has suggested several changes to our current Supplement Letter that goes to each scholarship candidate and to the Scholarship Rubric that is used as a metric for rating the candidates. The Scholarship Committee, headed by Susan Geveart, has worked hard to propose a process of selecting a candidate that is more streamlined with less ambiguity. The board has reviewed those suggestions and feels that they are sound and desirable. We would like the membership to review the changes so we can have a discussion and vote at our next potluck, Friday 10 December 2021.
Thank you,
The BISC Board.
Dear Members,
Last year the scholarship committee had problems determining what our goal was in picking the scholarship recipient. This was because the way the rubric panned out, need was not emphasized enough and grades and community service were over-emphasized. Taking the mission as expressed by Tom Vos: "our objective should emphasize giving assistance to one who has worked hard and needs the financial support to continue his/her education" as our central theme, we changed several things on both the rubric and the supplement. As we were doing this we considered several other issues.
1. that we were getting incomplete applications.
2. that we are not receiving applications from students going to trade/tech schools
3. that most of the students had chosen the most expensive out-of-state schools
4. that a student truly in need would probably not have a lot of extracurricular or community service hours, but would likely have a lot of work hours.
5. that quantifying the boxes between extremes on the rubric often made a choice of box impossible.
We tried to address all the issues and are pleased with the result.
Thanks,
Susan Gevaert Scholarship committee chair.
